Saturday, April 3rd, 2010, from 5pm to 7pm - Book Launch- My Street, Cuban Strories

On Saturday, April 3rd, the MEKIC Art Gallery and Library celebrated within its walls the launch of the book My Street, Cuban Stories. The fruit of collaboration between Iranian-born photographer Babak Salari and Bulgarian journalist Diana Ivanova, this book gathers together 52 Cuban stories and photographs related to the metaphor of the street. The book is published in English, Bulgarian and Spanish by Janet 45 Editors.

This work was born out of Diana Ivanova's desire to continue the story of her Bulgarian book Moyota ulitsa (My Street), and out of Babak Salari's interest for the island of Cuba and its inhabitants. Together, during the autumn of 2009, they undertook a journey through Cuba. In Havana, Santiago, Trinidad and other cities which they visited, they organized workshops where they invited Cubans to tell stories inspired by or recorded in the streets of their neighborhoods The participants were also invited to accompany their stories by their own photographs.

For one month, Diana Ivanov and Babak Salari explored these accounts of the Cuban streets. They intermingled their knowledge of writing and photography with the stories told by Cubans encountered during this enriching journey. The multiple narratives of Cuban life that guided their project have finally taken form in this beautiful book. Full of charm and candour, it is a unique and original kind of photo-documentary.

My street, Cuban Stories
is an exceptional testimony of exchange with the women and men of this unique island, through interaction with Diana Ivanov.
